What you will learn

Practice this visual check: First draw the long vertical neck, and then use the tail bent to the other side to balance the outer outline.

Shapes and proportions

Start with small arc head and short mouth line. Pull two long neck lines downward from the head, enclose an oval belly to the right, connect four short column legs below, and complete the tail with two upper curved lines.

A common mistake

The long neck and tail are squeezed to one side, and the body tends to appear skewed.

How to fix it

First draw the long vertical neck, and then use the tail bent to the other side to balance the outer outline.

These three images are key-stage previews: the starting shape, the completed outline, and a new crayon color study. Follow the complete drawing sequence in LittlePaper. On paper, leave room around the first shape for the parts added later.

A few things to start with

Select the color of the part to complete the crayon draft

The trunk and limbs of the giraffe are coral red, and the neck, belly and toenails are light cream. Apply the color first with light pressure, leaving the black outline, and then compare pairs of parts using the same color.
