What you will learn
Practice this visual check: Distribute the petals around the center before refining them. Keep the stem near the pot midpoint, make the rim wider than the base and contain the veins inside the leaf.
Shapes and proportions
Draw an oval flower center, then place round eyes, a curved smile and oval cheeks inside. Leave room all around for the petals. Radiate the petals around the center and extend a thin stem below it. Add soil at the base, attach a pointed leaf with a midrib and short veins, then wrap the pot rim around the soil and taper the pot toward its base. A tiny curved smile makes the potted flower feel like a companion that is growing with you.
A common mistake
Petals crowded on one side or a stem offset from the pot makes the flower look as though it is falling over.
How to fix it
Distribute the petals around the center before refining them. Keep the stem near the pot midpoint, make the rim wider than the base and contain the veins inside the leaf.
Leave room all around for the petals.
