What you will learn

Practice this visual check: Keep the front legs close together, compare all four paw heights, and use a few short fur points that follow the chest contour.

Shapes and proportions

Begin with two tall pointed ears joined to a narrow, rounded head. Leave space below for the long front legs. Draw the two front legs straight down and align their paws. Curve the seated body around them, add the rear paws beside them, then a raised fluffy tail. Short zigzags suggest cheek and chest fur; place eyes, nose and smiling mouth inside the head.

A common mistake

Front legs spreading too far apart make the dog look as though it is standing; random spikes make the chest look jagged.

How to fix it

Keep the front legs close together, compare all four paw heights, and use a few short fur points that follow the chest contour.

Leave space below for the long front legs.

    Choose colors for each part

Use blue-gray consistently for the head, body, front legs and tail, cream for the paired rear paws, dark charcoal for the nose and mouth corners, and pink for the tongue. Apply color lightly, keep the outline visible, and use the same color for matching parts.
