This cute kitten starts with the eyes and nose, then grows into a round-cheeked face and a sitting body. Pointed ears, whiskers and a curved tail make the cat easy to recognize. A purple bow adds one bright accessory against the orange coat.

The three selected images show the small face details, the developing head and the colored finish. They do not include every drawing step. Leave space around the eyes for the cheeks and ears, and below them for the body and paws. The complete LittlePaper lesson adds the smaller connections along the way.

A few things to start with

Paper, a pencil, orange or light brown crayons for the coat, pink for the ears and cheeks, and purple for the bow. Keep the eye highlights white. Or draw the full kitten lesson in LittlePaper on iPad or iPhone.

Bright eyes and a tiny nose

Start with two dark eyes and small white highlights, leaving a little space for the nose. These details should occupy only part of the page. The head and ears will grow around them, with the body well below.

Round cheeks and a little smile

The head curves now wrap around the face, with lashes, cheek marks and a small mouth. The upper outline is still open in this preview. Keep the cheeks broad enough that the eyes do not press against the outer edge.

An orange kitten with a purple bow

The finished example adds pointed ears, whiskers, a sitting body, little paws and a curling tail. Orange crayon colors the coat, pink accents the ears and cheeks, and purple makes the bow stand out. Leave the small yellow bow center and eye highlights clear.

A little practice goes a long way

Make room for your own ideas.

Keep the shiny eyes at a similar height and leave space for the small nose between them. A tiny mouth is enough to create a friendly expression.

Let the whiskers extend beyond the cheeks. A few clear lines on each side are easier to see than a dense bundle.

Use light orange strokes across the coat and a stronger color on the bow. A softly curved tail balances the sitting pose without needing lots of stripes.

A few drawing questions

How do I make the cat look cute?

Large bright eyes, a small nose and round cheeks give this kitten its gentle expression. Keep the eyes clear and avoid crowding the mouth with too many marks.

Does the kitten need to be orange?

No. Orange matches this example, but tan, gray or a lightly colored coat also works. Keep the face easy to read and choose a contrasting color for the bow.

How can I draw simple whiskers?

Use a few short lines that extend outward from each cheek. Leave space between them and stop before the whiskers become a dark patch.
